When considering how to best prepare your skin for a quality shave there are benefits to both shave cream and shave oil.
The goal of any Preshave is to seal in moisture and lubricate the shaving surface.
To create the foam in a Shave Cream requires blending water soluble products using a binding agent, commonly comprised of synthetic chemicals, to keep the product from separating. This blending process creates minute air pockets that will affect its ability to seal and lubricate when compared to a quality Shave Oil Air is the skins enemy, air oxidizes and drys by nature.
The benefit of Shave Cream is its color. Shave Cream provides a visual guide while shaving. the disadvantage is its color makes it more difficult to shave cleanly around beard, goatees side burns etc.
Shave Oils are non water soluble and alone contain little to no air providing for an unmatched moisture seal and lubricating surface.
Shaving oils can be used in lieu of a shaving cream.

Shaving oils are an all-in-one pre-shave prep for your skin.
Largely made up from carrier oils and in some cases essential oils a shaving oil works in two ways:
First, the oil from the solution will lock the moisture into your skin.
Hair softens and expands by 30% when exposed to warm water for 2 minutes
Therefore, if you shower or apply some warm water to your face prior to shaving, the shaving oil will help keep that water against your face and to further swell and soften your whiskers.
How does this help you?
A softer and swollen whisker will be able to get cut much easier.
This ultimately makes even lower quality blades perform well.
As a consumer who I would be considered to have normal to sensitive skin in an average climate with hard water.
